Dr Raymond Hernandez, MD
Dr. Hernandez was born and raised in San Antonio. He graduated from Clark High School, earning numerous academic awards including a National Merit Scholarship. He was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his father and uncle, both local physicians. As a youngster (before anyone heard of Indiana Jones), he became fascinated by the field of archeology after discovering arrowheads, artifacts and bison teeth at his father's Hill Country Ranch in Bandera County. He furthered this interest at Texas A&M University by earning a degree in Anthropology. Dr. Hernandez then moved to California to study at Stanford University School of Medicine. Following graduation from medical school, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine in San Antonio, then traveled to New Orleans for residency in Ophthalmology at the Ochsner Clinic. The Ochsner program included rotations in several clinics in New Orleans, as well as in the Louisiana cities of Monroe, Hammond and Houma (ask about the patient who shot an alligator and had the bullet bounce back into his own eye!). He also did two rotations in Mobile, Alabama. Following residency, Dr. Hernandez moved to Chicago for an additional year of subspecialty training in Glaucoma at Northwestern University School of Medicine. After a wonderful but very cold year, he returned home to San Antonio to enter private practice in 1996. Welcome to North Central Ophthalmology!
